Creating an Award Winning Garden – with Cathy Perry

Cathy trained at Winterbourne School of Horticulture, Birmingham and volunteers at Nettlefold Garden.  Her Wildlife Garden won a Platinum medal and Best Beautiful Border at BBC Gardener’s World Live 2022.  For the June 2023 show, Cathy is working with fellow designer Nik Attard to create a garden called “Where there’s a willow”.  It will use naturalistic planting, a dash of rewilding and a lovely mix of wild, cultivated and edible plants.  The garden is inspired by the natural balance of the wild world and a curiosity about our place in it.  After all, a space that’s brimming with nature brings us humans peace and renewal so what could be better than a garden habitat that nurtures us by encouraging nature to flourish?

The garden will support Birmingham Hospice (the new name for St. Mary’s and John Taylor hospices).  The hospice will have a marquee alongside the garden where they can raise awareness and raise funds for the hospice. After the show, the plants will go to the hospice gardens where they will bring joy to patients, families and staff.

The garden will cost around £5,000 to create.  Cathy has started crowdfunding via Just Giving to raise the funds required to bring the garden to life.  The link for Just Giving donations is below.

Cathy won a Silver Award for her beautiful garden the year.
